January data for all fiberglass boats was down for the month, but many states posted growth in the PWC segment. Texas, Louisiana, Idaho, South Carolina, Mississippi, Washington, New Hampshire and South Dakota showed positive or even growth in PWC for the month.

These preliminary statistics include 30 early reporting states, which represent approximately 61 percent of the national market. Only states that currently provide weekly or monthly information are included in this summary. Percentage change is presented on a calendar-year basis to reflect actual results. The Coast Guard Documented Vessels file was complete for the period. Final year-end numbers will become available when all states report in mid-March.

• Fiberglass boats in the 14- to 30-foot segment were down 42 percent for the month.
• Aluminum boats sales fell in January by 34.4 percent.
• PWC sales decreased 34.8 percent in the month.

New boat sales in January fell more steeply than in the prior month. Mixed results at the early regional winter shows were not enough to offset the steep declines in higher volume states for the month. Traditionally, January is seen as a strong shopping month that leads to future sales. Aggressive promotion in the PWC segment appears to have made a tangible impact in some states for the month of January.
