A new documentary on Reggie Fountain that focuses on his domination of the extreme sport of offshore powerboat racing and the legacy of performance innovations he left in his wake will debut on Tuesday.
“King of Offshore” will be shown on the NBC Sports Network at 2:30 p.m. (EST).
Not unlike modern day stock car racing, professional offshore powerboat racing evolved from a colorful history. From high-speed skiffs smuggling Canadian booze across the Detroit River to big horsepower vee-hulls purpose-built to outrun the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, it was all about who was the fastest.
Today, offshore powerboat racing is an organized professional motorsport boasting million-dollar machines capable of speeds faster than 200 mph. Much of the modern performance technology employed in these machines can trace its lineage to Fountain.
