Report shows Americans are saving more

Three years after the Great Recession began, U.S. families are surprising analysts by the rate at which they're clearing debt and increasing their savings.

The trend is encouraging as the country continues its recovery from the wrenching downturn, according to the Washington Post.

Consumer spending accounts for about two-thirds of the U.S. economy. Americans who have turned around their own finances will be able to spend again, but without falling deeply into debt, the Post reported.
