RIMTA hosts panel discussion on career paths for women in boating

RIMTA Future, part of the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association, will host a panel on career paths for women in the marine trades. “Women in Marine Industry Businesses: An Exploration of Career Paths,” will take place tomorrow at the Newport Yacht Club (110 Long Wharf, Newport, R.I.) from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

The event will feature a panel of four women who have forged careers in the marine industry. The panelists all work at Rhode Island-based marine companies.

The panelists include: Heather Hovanec, the first female boat builder on the Aquidneck Custom Composites team; Martha Parker, a big-boat competitive sailor and businesswoman who founded Team One Newport, a retail sailing apparel company; Tara Regan, the first woman to be hired as general manager for The Hinckley Company boat yards; and Kate Wilson, a leader in marketing & communications and founder of risingT Media.

Holly Ashton of IYRS School of Technology & Trades will moderate the panel. The discussion will include how the women got where they are today, challenges they face, and what they see as the best practices for building a successful career in the marine industry.
