Sea Tow reports busiest Fourth of July period in its history

With seven drownings and at least one close call, the Fourth of July was an especially dangerous weekend on North Texas lakes.

A couple of cases involved party boats, and although only one has been linked to alcohol consumption, authorities are warning of the dangers of drinking and boating, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Denton County sheriff’s deputies were sending extra patrols to “Party Cove,” a cove on Lewisville Lake near West Lake Park, as a result of the drownings.

The extended Fourth of July weekend this year was the busiest in the 30-year history of on-water assistance provider Sea Tow Services International, Sea Tow’s national 24/7 Dispatch Center, together with its individual locations across the country, reported a 12 percent increase in calls for on-water assistance during the five-day weekend from July 3-7 from calls reported during the five-day holiday period from July 2-6, 2012.

“This July 4th holiday weekend was the busiest we’ve seen since I founded Sea Tow back in 1983,” Sea Tow founder and CEO Capt. Joe Frohnhoefer said in a statement. “Across the country our U.S. Coast Guard-licensed Sea Tow captains and crew demonstrated their high level of professionalism and skill by responding quickly when needed and helping Sea Tow members and other boaters stay safe on the water.”

As usual, the No. 1 assistance request reported by Sea Tow during the July 4 holiday period was for boat tows. More than 38 percent of Sea Tow captains across the country provided a salvage or recovery service during the long weekend.
