Two marine companies close up shop

Washington-based Palmer Marine and its sister company, Bladen Composites in North Carolina, have closed their doors.

Both went out of business last month, according to reports. Both company's Web sites were shut down, and a phone number for Palmer Marine was out of service.

Reports said the economy is to blame for the closures.

In 2007, Soundings Trade Only reported Palmer Marine was moving some of its operations from Florida to North Carolina, which had provided a grant for the move. At the time, Palmer said it planned to invest $3 million in the new facility, and expected to create 120 jobs.

Palmer Marine built several lines of sportfishing boats including the Defiance, Tiderunner and Voyager brands.
