An estimated 115,000 jobs were added in April and the unemployment rate was little changed at 8.1 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Employment increased in professional and business services, retail trade and health care, but declined in transportation and warehousing.

The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) was little changed, at 5.1 million in April. These people made up 41.3 percent of the unemployed. During the year, the number of long-term unemployed has fallen by 759,000.

The number of people employed part time for economic reasons was essentially unchanged in April, at 7.9 million.

In April, 2.4 million people were marginally attached to the labor force, essentially unchanged from a year earlier. These people were not in the labor force, wanted and were available for work and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months. They were not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for work in the four weeks preceding the survey.
