Winter boat show report Part III

With boat show season in full swing, here's a compilation of reports from recent shows and updates from upcoming shows.

The California debut of PassageMaker magazine’s Trawler Fest, was a success, organizers say, with more than 1,000 people in attendance.

The event took place Feb. 26-28 at the Kona Kai Resort and Marina on Shelter Island in San Diego.

PassageMaker made the decision to add the San Diego event to their Trawler Fest lineup after repeated requests from regional marine companies and cruisers. Similar events take place in Maryland, Florida, New York and Washington.

“The San Diego Trawler Fest was full of people excited about their cruising plans,” noted exhibitor Brian Calvert, general manager of Selene Seattle, in a statement. “Folks are realizing that the world is not coming to an end, and if it is, there is no better place to be than in an oceangoing trawler full of fuel and groceries.”

The next Trawler Fest takes place May 7-9 in Anacortes, Wash. Exhibitor and attendee registration is open. Call (888) 487-2953 for details.

The 13th annual Downtown Hampton In-Water Boat Show was cancelled, a victim of the economy, the Daily Press (Va.) reports.

The show had been scheduled for April 24-26.

Last year's show attracted 32 vendors and distributors, while this year only six vendors and one distributor had signed up, Sherry Spring, executive director of the Downtown Hampton Development Partnership, told the newspaper.

Spring, who did not immediately return a call for comment this morning, told the newspaper the event will return next year.

The Newport Spring Boat Show, celebrating its 35th year, is set for a three-day run May 15-17, at the Newport Yachting Center in Newport, R.I.

Included will be brokerage boats and clearance models of new boats, boating products, equipment and accessories plus the second year of the “Marine Consignment Tent” filled with used items from boaters and boat dealers alike.

“We will have our Bargain Consignment Tent again. It was really successful last year and we hope to double its size this year,” show director Nancy Piffard said in a statement. “Plus, partial proceeds will go to the Seamen’s Institute. It gives our exhibitors, as well as the general public, the chance to sell marine-related items that would otherwise go unused. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.”

Nearly 200 boats — from dealers and brokers — are expected to be on hand, with a total of 300 exhibits throughout the show.
