Hatteras employees restore 41-foot sportfishing yacht

A fully refurbished Knit Wits — the first Hatteras sportfishing yacht, built in 1960 — was the centerpiece of an employee appreciation day at the New Bern, N.C., headquarters.

Employees who worked to restore the boat signed their names on the hatch of the 41-foot convertible “sort of as a time capsule,” president John Ward said at a celebration dedicated to employees who have helped the company transition to new ownership with Versa Capital Management.

“It’s our way of saying thank you for helping us move in the right direction and getting us back on track,” the New Bern Sun Journal reported him saying at the event, which was held Friday.

Ward praised employees for their talent and dedication in getting 10 yachts prepared for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which took place Oct. 31-Nov. 4.

“They have all done great work getting the boats ready for the boat show” and in refurbishing Knit Wits while incorporating the most modern technology available to a seagoing sportfishing yacht, he told the Sun Journal.

The event included many of the 275 people who are still employed by Hatteras and Cabo Yachts. The companies were once Craven County’s largest employer with 1,500 jobs.
