Larson Boat Group touts green attributes of VEC hulls

In honor of Earth Day, the Larson Boat Group produced the 51,437th VEC boat hull, a patented environmentally clean manufacturing technology the group has been using since 1999.

VEC is a computer-controlled process that provides consistency and produces 91 percent less emissions than traditional open-mold fiberglass boatbuilding techniques, the company says. Annually, the VEC manufacturing process saves almost 15,000 pounds of styrene emissions from entering Earth's atmosphere.

LBG’s green manufacturing techniques continue with Triumph's 13 models built with Roplene, a fully recycled resin that is used to construct what the company said are almost indestructible boats. The minimum off-fall of every Triumph boat is just a little seed into building the next boat, the company said. This, too, is recycled and used when making the next Triumph boat.

Other environmental efforts include:

• Recycled more than 65 tons of corrugated cardboard

• 40,000 pounds of plastic recycled

• 1,300-plus gelcoat drums returned to the supplier to be washed and reused

• More than 10,000 pounds of aluminum recycled

• Hundreds of pounds of unused foam off-fall are returned to the supplier to be used in other applications

“Our green manufacturing practices are not only good for the environment, but good for the company," Larson Boat Group president and CEO Rob Parmentier said in a statement. “Our VEC and Roplene green manufacturing processes are just one illustration of how Larson Boat Group has been a boatbuilding innovator throughout the company's 100-plus year history, only to continue for our next century of boatbuilding heritage.”
