Marquis Yachts' production ahead of schedule

After emerging from bankruptcy with a new owner, Marquis Yachts has seen employment go from a few dozen earlier this year to about 235 and there are plans to add more workers this summer.

That should bring the total to about 275 employees.

"Every week we've been growing a little bit," company president Bob VanGrunsven told the Green Bay Press Gazette newspaper. "Our 50-foot line has done very well for us, mostly overseas, and we have several orders we have started for the Southeastern [United States] market."

Marquis builds both the Marquis and Carver lines of yachts, and production has reached about a boat per week - a level achieved quicker than company officials initially planned.

In January, production was zero.

Marquis had been part of Genmar Holdings, which filed for Chapter 11 protection last summer. It was purchased at auction in January by Genmar founder Irwin Jacobs and business partner John Paul Dejoria for a little more than $6 million.
