Morris Yachts wins Coast Guard contract

Morris Yachts was contracted by the Coast Guard Academy for a sixth training vessel and two more contracts are possible by the end of the year.

The new 44-foot David Pedrick-designed vessels will replace the decades-old Luders sailing craft. Morris Yachts is in production on Hull No. 1 of the Leadership 44. In all, the company will produce eight vessels for the academy.

All funds for the project are being raised privately, the Bass Harbor, Maine-based company said. The academy launched a capital campaign to fund the project.

"This is a very prestigious and exciting contract for Morris Yachts," said Cuyler Morris, president of Morris Yachts, in a statement. "It is an honor to be chosen by our country's Coast Guard Academy to build these craft. These vessels are the foundation of leadership training at the Coast Guard Academy."

Founded in 1972 by Tom Morris, Morris Yachts is a premier builder of semicustom and custom sailing yachts from 29 to 70 feet.
