North Sails featured on The Science Channel tonight

The Science Channel program "How It's Made" will feature North Sails' 3DL manufacturing facility in Minden, Nev., tonight at 9 p.m. EDT.

The 4-minute, 40-second segment will focus on how the sailmaker manufactures and finishes its 3DL sails. The yarn in these sails is thermo-molded on a full-size mold in the precise curved space it will occupy when sailing, locking in optimum shape.

Viewers will get a tour of the 110,000-square-foot facility that employs more than 100 people and turns out sails for thousands of boats worldwide yearly.

"North Sails is proud to be a part of the 'How It's Made' series because it will showcase our technology and innovation to a very broad audience outside the sailing industry," said Gary Weisman, president of North Sails, in a statement.

"We have used a scientific approach to building 3DL sails from day one," said Weisman, who has been with the company for 13 years. "Over the course of the past five years, we have continued expanding this facility by adding and upgrading overhead gantries, which are suspended above nine articulated molds where the sails are built."

The film crew spent several days at the facility in March, and the segment is part of episode 17 of this year's season.
