South Carolina builder plans move to larger facility

South Carolina-based Sportsman Boats Manufacturing, a startup in 2011, is expanding its manufacturing capacity for new boat models the company is planning.

The saltwater fishing-boat builder is moving to a new 72,600-square-foot facility as part of a $2.35 million expansion that will create about 50 jobs, according to a statement from the South Carolina Department of Commerce.

“We are pleased with the success we’ve had here in Dorchester County and we’re looking forward to growing our operations here. This expansion is a big step for our company. South Carolina has provided a great fit for our business and we appreciate all the support we’ve received from state and local officials,” Sportsman Boats Manufacturing president Tommy Hancock said in a statement.

The company expects to have made the move by Labor Day.

South Carolina said it has recruited more than $9 billion in capital investment and more than 23,000 jobs in the manufacturing sector since January 2011.
