Sunsail Sailing Vacations of Clearwater, Fla., was awarded Best Asia-Based Charter Company at the recent Asia Boating Awards 2009 in Shanghai.

The awards recognize the efforts of boatbuilders, marinas, clubs and individuals in creating a diverse and exciting boating community in the region. Judges chose the winners from nominees drafted by Asia-Pacific Boating reader votes.

Sunsail's commitment to the region, selection of bareboat options, training options and brand building were all cited as reasons for its selection as Best Asia-Based Charter Company.

"Sunsail pioneered the charter industry in this region, with our first base established in Thailand in 1991," said Lex Raas, Sunsail's president and CEO, in a statement.

Today, Sunsail has bases in Koh Chang, Koh Samui and Phuket in Thailand, and Langkawi in Malaysia. The firm also opened new yacht charter bases in Pula, Croatia; Palermo and Tropea, Italy; Orhaniye, Turkey; and the British Virgin Islands.
