A 0.5 percent county sales tax takes effect April 1 in Fond du Lac, Wis., passed as a way to fund a loan for Mercury Marine, the county's largest employer.

The county board approved the loan and tax as an incentive to keep Mercury in Fond du Lac and about 2,000 jobs in the state, instead of consolidating operations at its plant in Stillwater, Okla. Mercury subsequently announced it would consolidate its Stillwater plant into the Fond du Lac plant.

The "sunset" tax is slated to end in 2021.
