The National Marine Representatives Association awarded a $1,500 academic scholarship to Oren Niskin, who is studying yacht design at the Westlawn Institute of Technology.

Niskin, of Miami Beach, plans to start a boatbuilding operation with his two brothers.

A member of Coconut Grove Sailing Club in Miami, Niskin enlisted in the Navy in 2002 as an electrician's mate. He earned a bachelors degree in nuclear engineering technology from Thomas Edison State College while serving.
