The vessels have new features - air filters, bulletproof flotation vests - that reflect the expanding needs of the agencies as they patrol the city's more than 400 miles of coastline, according to an article in The New York Times.

Paid for with federal and city funds, the boats are being made at Eastern Shipbuilding in Panama, Fla., and will make the long trip north to New York on their hulls.
