New York business partners Ray Hirani and Monte Gisborne announced that Loon, their 10-passenger recreational solar boat, recently won the Mansura Award.

Established by the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 2007, the Mansura Award rewards excellence in the design, development and operation of hybrid power for oceangoing, coastal and inland vessels. Eligible vessels must use at least two independent sources of propulsive power, and the final drive system must be electrical.

“This design of sturdy inland electric watercraft has undergone a long period of prototype development, with the result that it has gained such a reputation throughout Canada and the U.S.A. that the builders are starting series production at a brand-new facility at Rome, N.Y., in the United States with the active encouragement of the local authority,” said Jack Edwards, chairman of trustees for the award, in a statement.
