Field demos of Yanmar Marine’s hydrogen-powered fuel-cell system continue with the reported first-ever 70-MPa (megapascal) high-pressure hydrogen refueling of Yanmar’s EX38A FC test-bed boat.
The refueling was coordinated between Yanmar Power Technology and Toyota Tsusho Corp., the latter providing the high-pressure facility and a prototype hydrogen refueling hose, Yanmar said in a statement.

The company said the 70-MPa, high-pressure refueling resulted in more than three times longer cruising time compared to the previous refueling process.
The 300kW-class maritime fuel-cell system was developed with Toyota and utilizes modules from the automaker’s Mirai fuel-cell vehicle. Yanmar will continue to conduct field studies and submit results to maritime classification societies, with a launch planned for 2023.

Yanmar’s green energy plan is aligned with the International Maritime Organization’s strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by the end of the century.
