Zurn Yacht Design is celebrating 200 MJM builds with six new 50z yachts delivered.

Zurn, MJM Yachts' Bob Johnstone (of J Boats fame), and Boston Boatworks have teamed up to create a line of powerboats, and the MJM 50z M/Y Zing will be on display at Yachts Miami Beach from Thursday through Monday on Collins Avenue Ramp 4; Downeast Cove 7-8.

Zurn said the MJM50z is the largest boat in the fleet by 10 feet, and it comes with twin or triple Volvo Penta IPS600s.

MJM Yachts gets its engineering expertise from Burke Design. Owner Steve Burke works with Zurn and Boston Boat Works, analyzing the Kevlar/e-glass composite laminates and structure to ensure that they comply with new International Organization for Standardization small-craft structural requirements.

Zurn said the MJM 40z and the 50z are the only boats of their type to have an ISO rating of A Ocean, the international standard’s toughest design category. It’s defined as the “category of boats considered suitable for seas of up to 7 meters (23 feet) significant wave height and winds of Beaufort Force 9 (41-47 knots) or less.”

Bob Johnstone plays an active role in model development and works closely with his partners at Boston Boat Works and Zurn to get the boats built.

“We’re essentially their in-house design staff,” Zurn Yacht Design principal Doug Zurn said in a statement. “It’s a more direct result if a designer is working with the builder on building a boat, versus the designer just passing the design off and the builder has his staff interpret the designers’ thoughts — things get lost and the boat gets muddy. MJMs aren’t like that; they’re very clean. The input that comes from Bob through us to the builder is a very, very, straight path — a very clear path.”
