Bio-Solv

Leave your respirator in the shop - that's what the distributors of a new non-petroleum cleaning solvent say you can do when its product is used to prepare surfaces.

Bio-Solv is a non-toxic, non-flammable cleaner that works better than acetone or xylene, and is much safer to use, according to Anthony Severino, marketing manager for MAS Epoxies, the Cinnaminson, N.J., company that began selling Bio-Solv early this year.

The company buys it from a proprietary manufacturer, he says.

"It's slightly more expensive than acetone but well worth it," says Severino. "It lasts longer because it evaporates slower than acetone." Bio-Solv is available at West Marine or through Port Supply in sizes from a pint ($9) to a 55-gallon drum ($2,800). Contact: MAS Epoxies/Bio-Solv, (888) 627-3769. www.greenacetone.com
