The Women in the Industry 1+1 program connects people in the first five years of their marine careers with industry leaders for a 30-minute, virtual one-on-one conversation to share insights, expand knowledge, and to foster personal development and community. All genders are welcome.

Vice President of Marketing for MarineMax, Abbey Heimensen is a boating enthusiast and has been her entire life. She joined MarineMax in 2011 and has over 20 years of marketing experience, including leading the MarineMax Marketing Team for the past six years. Her responsibilities have included directing and executing marketing strategies to promote the business and working directly with the MarineMax Executive Team, Regional Presidents, and Marketing Coordinators. She also oversees all North American marketing efforts for Galeon Yachts and global marketing efforts for Aquila Power Catamarans. In addition to her role at MarineMax Abbey is on the board of the Marine Marketers of America demonstrating her passion and commitment to boating and the industry.

Áine Denari, President, Brunswick Boat Group

Áine Denari serves as Executive Vice President and President of the Brunswick Boat Group, a position she has held since 2020.

In her current position, Ms. Denari has responsibility for all aspects of the largest boat portfolio in the recreational marine industry, consisting of 17 brands globally, with manufacturing facilities in 6 countries, distributing via 1,300 dealers and distributors. Áine is based at Brunswick’s global HQ in Mettawa, Illinois, USA.

Prior to joining Brunswick, Ms. Denari spent 25 years in a variety of executive positions within the automotive and industrial industries, as well as in leadership positions at major global consulting firms. From 2014 to 2020, Ms. Denari was a Senior Vice President at ZF AG, a global automotive Tier 1 supplier with annual revenue of €40B, where she most recently led the Automated Driving / Advanced Driver Assistance Systems business. Previously, Ms. Denari worked in strategy consulting in Europe and the US with consulting firms McKinsey & Company and Bain & Company, and spent time in various engineering and strategy roles with Ford Motor Company and Ingersoll Rand.

Ms. Denari holds an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, completed the Stanford Executive Program, holds Advanced Engineering degrees from Purdue University and University of Detroit Mercy, and a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from University College in Dublin, Ireland.

Amber Selking, VP Leadership & Culture Lippert Components

As a former soccer player at the University of Notre Dame where she graduated with a Management Consulting degree, Dr. Selking started her career in human resources with a global manufacturing company. After recognizing a similar performance dynamic in business as she experienced in sport, she returned to graduate school to better understand the art and science of human high performance. She received a master’s degree in Sport & Performance Psychology from the University of Denver, and her PhD in Applied Sport & Performance Psychology from the University of Missouri. Dr. Selking founded the Selking Performance Group, where their mission is to help individuals, sports teams, and business organizations unleash performance excellence by tapping into the power of Mindset and Leadership. She speaks with organizations around the world on these topics and serves has the mental performance consultant to Head Coach Brian Kelly and the Notre Dame Football team. She has also served as an adjunct professor in the Mendoza College of Business at Notre Dame. Amber joined Lippert Components, Inc. in 2018, a publicly traded, global manufacturing company headquartered in Elkhart, IN where she serves as the Vice President of Leadership & Culture Development.

Angela Pilkington, CFO, Correct Craft

Angela Pilkington is the Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff of Correct Craft, a 95-year-old marine industry company with global operations. Correct Craft’s subsidiaries include eight boat brands, three engine brands, three watersports parks and an entity devoted solely to innovation. The company has manufacturing facilities across the U.S. and distributes into 70 countries.

Angela has held various positions with the company for 40 years, including Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer. In her current role, she oversees all the subsidiaries and works with each president to drive major initiatives to optimize their operations and execute their strategic plans.

Angela has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Florida and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Central Florida. She is also a Certified Management Accountant. Angela is the past recipient of the Darlene Brigg award by MRAA and Boating IndustryMagazine. Angela has also received her Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma from Villanova University.

Angela is involved in the Florida Institute of Chief Financial Officer’s, is on the Junior Achievement Central Florida Board and served on the Board of Impower, formerly The Grove Counseling Center, for six years.

Ann Baldree, SVP, Chaparral Boats

As a native of Nashville, Georgia I have strong family ties and roots in my home town which is the World Headquarters for Chaparral and Robalo Boats. I attended Valdosta State University majoring in drama and speech and a few years later I began my career at Chaparral and Robalo Boats almost 41 years ago.

I was hired as a receptionist and A/P clerk at a starting rate of $4.44 per hour never imagining that I would find my life’s work in the marine industry. I admire our employees and the contribution and impact our company makes to the livelihood of our small community. I admire the passion of our employees and dealer network located all around the world. I never cease to be amazed by their true entrepreneurial spirit.

I found my interest was focused in sales management which allowed me to work closely with our dealer network which I have found to be especially rewarding.

My passion for hard work, loyalty, and strong relationships have propelled my career including my current position as a member of our Executive Team and company Senior Vice President, providing insight to our company President and Founder and leading the Sales and Customer Service teams for Chaparral and Robalo.

I have proudly contributed to keeping the company successful in changing economies and business environments, and have championed the effort to support what I feel are our organization’s most important assets, its employees, dealer network and vendor partners.

Giving back to the industry is very important to me. I currently serve on the NMMA Board, BMD Board, our local Chamber of Commerce, and the First Commerce Credit Union Charity Board. In 2008 I was honored and humbled to receive the prestigious Darlene Briggs Marine Industry Woman of the Year award. The Briggs family have been a long-time dealer for Chaparral my relationship with them made the honor very special. In 2015 I was presented with the STEP Ahead Award in Washington D. C.

I have been very fortunate to have a career that I can be proud of and feel passionate about. I have been a mentor to women within my company and community and I find personal fulfillment in helping others find their true career path.

Anne Dunbar, IBEX Show Director

Anne Dunbar, IBEX Show Director, is a 30+ year marine industry veteran responsible for producing the International Boatbuilders' Exhibition & Conference, IBEX, the marine industry's leading trade event for showcasing new boat building materials, technologies, and products that inspires innovation and advancement in the marine Industry.

Her first job in the marine industry was giving away free subscriptions to Soundings magazine at the Long Beach Boat Show. From there she went on to work for all the primary marine trade magazines including Soundings Trade Only Boating Industry and Professional BoatBuilder magazine. In 2002, she took on the role of Marketing Director for the IBEX Show and began a new career in event management. In 2013 she was promoted to Show Director.

Each IBEX welcomes more than 5000+ marine professionals, 700+ exhibitors and completely fills all three levels and 135,300 net sq ft of the Tampa Convention Center. Working with a talented staff they create a dynamic show experience that educates, enables and inspires marine industry professionals from throughout the world. Anne responsibilities include all areas of IBEX planning from managing a team of twelve, overseeing financials to overall event strategy and she continually develop and evaluate new ideas to improve the value and quality of the show experience to ensure both exhibitors and visitors consider IBEX is the most valuable three days of the year.

Bill Yeargin, President/CEO, Correct Craft

Bill Yeargin is CEO of Correct Craft, a 97-year-old company with global operations. Correct Craft’s subsidiaries include eight boat brands, three engine brands, three water sports parks and an entity devoted solely to innovation. The company has manufacturing facilities across the U.S. and distributes into about 70 countries. 

Under Bill’s leadership, Correct Craft has developed a unique culture of “Making Life Better.” They have won all their industry’s major awards and were recognized as Florida’s “Manufacturer of the Year.” One publication recognized Correct Craft as the boating industry’s "Most Innovative Company" and another described the company under Bill’s leadership as being “on an aggressive improvement path, the likes of which the marine industry has never seen.” 

A passionate lifelong learner, Bill has earned a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and an MBA. He has also completed post-graduate studies at Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Villanova University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Bill is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and is certified in both Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and DISC.

Bill has served on numerous for-profit and non-profit boards. Currently he serves on the Board of Directors of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) , the Florida Chamber of Commerce, and the Florida Council of 100. 

Bill served both the Obama and Trump administrations on cabinet-level advisory councils and actively represents both his company and industry on national and state issues. He was also appointed by Florida’s Governor to serve on the board of University of Central Florida. 

Bill has been recognized with many of the marine industry’s top awards including Boating Industry's “Mover and Shaker of the Year.” Florida Trend magazine has recognized Bill as one of “Florida’s Most Influential Business Leaders” and he is an Orlando Business Journal “CEO of the Year.” Bill was also presented the “Governor’s Business Ambassador Medal” by the Governor of Florida. 

A prolific writer, Bill has been published hundreds of times and has authored five books including the best seller Education of a CEO: Lessons for Leaders. He has traveled to over 110 countries and is a sought-after conference speaker.

Brenna Priesser, President, Business Acceleration Division of Brunswick

Brenna D. Preisser serves as executive vice president, chief strategy officer and president of Business Acceleration, a position she has held since January 2019. Ms. Preisser led the planned succession for her role as chief people officer in December 2021 to fully assume her current role.

Ms. Preisser now leads a division of Brunswick expanding marine participation through boater services and shared access models. The portfolio of businesses includes Freedom Boat Club - the largest national boat club operation in the industry, financial services, and several new business ventures in the early stage of commercialization such as Boateka – a direct-to-consumer pre-owned boat refurbishment and sales business. In her capacity as strategy officer, she leads business transformation and is responsible for innovation assets, such as a joint venture with TechNexus, and advanced design methodologies for new business models.

Since joining the company in 2004, Ms. Preisser has been in charge of reforming company culture and evolving the business operating model. She was elected Brunswick’s vice president and chief human resources officer effective March 31, 2016 through Dec. 7, 2021. During this time Ms. Preisser contributed to Brunswick being named to the Forbes list of best mid-sized and large-sized places to work, as well as the Forbes list of America’s Best Employers for Women.

Ms. Preisser has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ohio University in Athens, and a Master of Business Administration from Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio.

Carl Blackwell, former CMO, NMMA

Carl Blackwell is a strategic marketing executive with extensive experience developing groundbreaking integrated marketing programs that deliver results across entire industries. He applies innovation and expertise in market research, strategy, advertising, public relations, digital, social, interactive and influencer marketing, sales promotion, and events to strengthen brands and drive business performance.

A longtime executive at the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) – the world’s largest marine trade association which represents members who make 80% of the nation’s boats annually, Carl is a creative, strategic thinker with serial successes that have delivered immediate and long-term growth for the recreational boating industry. His programs attracted waves of curiosity seekers, translating their interest into sales. He leads with an analytical perspective that is tied to business metrics and innovative, novel deployment tactics.

In his most recent role at NMMA, Carl was CMO and SVP Marketing with full accountability for all marketing in the US and Canada. His team developed and executed integrated campaigns and led 18 annual consumer boat shows across the country. He spearheaded the first Discover Boating campaign in 2006 and each of the subsequent 14 campaigns, integrating national cable television advertising, print, digital, extensive collateral and established the largest consumer recreational boating lifestyle website (DiscoverBoating.com). The program drove sales, attracting nearly five million consumers annually to the website while routing three million to a boat manufacturer or dealer, where 12% eventually became boat owners. Carl also leveraged social media in its infancy. His early Facebook success produced the largest virtual recreational boating community in the world, winning 2011’s prestigious Effie Award. Carl’s research into boat club membership and boat rentals advanced legacy industry perceptions and demonstrated ways to embrace these new facets of recreational boating. His many outstanding achievements helped Carl earn the appointment to the role of President of Grow Boating, Inc, a $10M industry marketing co-op and funding organization for the “Discover Boating” initiative. This initiative is the world’s largest boating lifestyle campaign.

Carly Hysell, Associate Director of Public Relations, Garmin

Carly Hysell joined the in-house corporate communications and public relations team at Garmin in 2007 with an emphasis on its marine markets. Today she leads Garmin’s PR efforts for its five business segments – fitness, outdoor, aviation, marine and auto – as the Associate Director of Public Relations. During her tenure, she has been instrumental in dozens of key product launches for the company that has helped strategically place Garmin as a leader in all of the markets it serves.

Chris Drees, President, Mercury Marine

Christopher (Chris) Drees is the President of Mercury Marine, based in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Mercury Marine, a division of the Brunswick Corporation, is the world’s leading manufacturer of marine propulsion systems, and marine parts and accessories.

Drees joined Mercury Marine in 1998 and has held a variety of roles in different functions including operations, sales and marketing, and general management. After being selected to lead the Attwood division in 2006, he returned to Mercury in 2014 as the vice president of global operations and subsequently was named president of Mercury parts and accessories in 2018. In April of 2019 Drees was named President of Mercury Marine.

Chris was integral with the acquisition and integration of Brunswick’s largest acquisition, Power Products, into the parts and accessories group and the manufacturing launch of Mercury’s new line of 4-stroke products.

Drees earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and an MBA from Marquette University. Chris is currently on the Board of Directors for the National Exchange Bank and Trust, National Marine Manufacturers Association, Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce and Keller Inc.

Donna Giddens, CSI Director, Chaparral Boats

Growing up I knew I wanted a career and wanted to work for a company that connected me to the world. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Textile and Apparel Science at North Carolina State University and moved to Nashville, Georgia for a career opportunity. During this time, I married and started a family. I struggled to find the balance between my passion for my own career and my important role as a wife and mother. In 2001 I took a leap of faith and started my career with Chaparral and Robalo Boats.

I accepted a position as the Executive Assistant and Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) coordinator and have grown in the company to now manage the internal Sales Support team which are all young women. Our team manages production for the company and supports our Senior Vice President and 7 regional sales directors who manage territories with 278 dealer’s world -wide including 69 International dealers.

The advice from my mentors has been invaluable in my career and family life. I have found inspiration, guidance, and support from them. Great mentor/mentee relationships are essential for growth and life-long learning.

I believe our worth is our contribution. I serve on the local Family Connections Communities and Schools Executive Board and enjoy volunteering in the Kinship Caregiver support group. There is great need in our surrounding small communities --our company and I feel a huge responsibility to give back to help others succeed.

Working to find balance in your career and family life is often difficult. The truth is it is more of a juggling act. Women have the great ability to multitask and juggle many projects at the same time. I have found choosing to be present and intentional with your career and family is what has worked for me.

Ellen Bradley, Chief Brand Officer and SVP Marketing & Communications, National Marine Manufacturers Association

Ellen Bradley leads marketing, digital, communications, and business intelligence for the NMMA as chief brand officer. A creative strategist and brand storyteller, Bradley helps shape the industry’s voice as it engages with its many audiences – from boaters to investors to policy makers. She recently oversaw the refresh of the Discover Boating brand and creation of a new campaign titled, “See You Out Here”, to invite the next generation of boaters and engage and support current boaters in their changed, post-Covid world. Bradley places the NMMA and Discover Boating brand purpose at the core of everything she and her team do while bringing together the power of digital, data, and compelling content to successfully advocate and expand the market for recreational boating. Bradley is on the board of directors for the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation and the Water Sports Industry Association and is the Communications Chair for the Center for Sportfishing Policy. She lives in Chicago and can be found boating on Lake Michigan with her husband and two small children.

Eric Kufel, CEO West Marine

Eric brings over two decades of executive leadership experience to West Marine and has a proven track record of delivering category-leading growth across a wide range of brands, business models, and industries. He most recently served as Executive Chairman of Leslie's, Inc., where he partnered with the team to transform Leslie's into the largest and most trusted omni-channel brand in the U.S. pool and spa care industry through significant investments in technology and core infrastructure.

Prior to his time at Leslies, Eric served as the CEO of CorePower Yoga, building the company into the largest yoga studio operator in the U.S. He has also served as CEO of Van's Foods and Inventure Foods Inc. and began his career in various Brand Management positions at Kellogg's, The Coca-Cola Company and Henkel.

Eric took the helm at West Marine in August 2021. He is excited to build upon its category leading position to become the leading tech-enabled platform for boating enthusiasts, providing unmatched product breadth, best-in-class value, expert knowledge, and superior convenience and service.

As a leader, Eric is committed to creating a winning culture and fostering an environment where great people want to come work every day. Frank Hugelmeyer, President, NMMA

Frank Hugelmeyer is president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association.

Often described as an inspirational and dynamic chief executive with a pioneering spirit, Frank has more than 30 years of senior executive experience in the global sporting goods and outdoor recreation sectors. He’s worked as the CEO at three of America’s most influential outdoor trade associations and was a senior executive for two global equipment manufacturers. He began his career at NYC’s largest and oldest sporting goods retailer.

His unique career journey has taken him around the globe and enabled him to collaborate closely with many of the world’s leading outdoor consumer brands and retailers including Amazon, Patagonia, REI, Nike, The North Face, Thor Industries, Winnebago and now the very best brands across the recreational boating and fishing sectors.

He excels in establishing exciting clear visions and well-linked strategic plans. He’s also known for building powerful consumer brand platforms, highly collaborative cultures, and promoting greater executive leadership and self-awareness.

Greg Lentine, CEO, Norcross Marine

Greg Lentine, President of NorCross Marine Products, has been tied to the marine industry his entire life. His family owned a boat dealership; he spent his early summers on the Jersey Shore waterskiing, fishing and crabbing; and worked at the family business while attending college, ultimately managing the service department at the dealership after graduating, where he gained a knack for business administration and marine innovation.

In 1999, Greg founded NorCross Marine Products. He launched the company’s first product in 2000 during Boating Week, the first-ever Wireless Depth Sounder. And in 2003, he pioneered another marine innovation, the portable fish finder, which is now an industry standard among inland and backwater fishermen.

Greg is one of the youngest tenured NMMA Board members and has been involved in numerous committees advocating for the industry, particularly small businesses. He has been a member of NMMA’s Marine Accessories & Components Division for more than 20 years and has served as Chairman; he has also served on NMMA’s Executive Committee and Membership Committee. In 2022 he was awarded the Alan J Freedman Memorial Leadership Award by the National Marine Manufacturers Association for his outstanding contributions to the marine accessories industry through leadership, creativity, and personal motivation.

Near and dear to Greg’s heart is the Michael Shields Memorial Inshore Fishing Tournament, which was founded more than twelve years ago in memory of his close friend. Proceeds of the tournament go to Project Lift – a non-profit that serves more than 500 teens and young adults annually, providing mental health and substance abuse treatment through the unique platform of vocational training.

Greg attended the University of Central Florida, earning a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and Marketing. He lives his passion everyday fly fishing the lakes and rivers of Utah, ice fishing, inshore and offshore fishing in Florida and the Caribbean.

Jan Morton, VP Supply Chain, Mastercraft

Jan Morton joined MasterCraft Boat Holdings January 2019 as Supply Chain Consultant and transitioned to a MasterCraft Boat Holdings employee July 2019. Ms. Morton has extensive recreational marine experience, having enjoyed a successful 34-year career with Brunswick Boat Group where she was promoted to roles of increasing responsibility in operations and supply chain over her career. Ms. Morton served as VP of Supply Chain Brunswick Boat Group prior to joining MasterCraft Boat Boat Holdings. Ms. Morton is well respected in the marine industry and serves on the Planning Committee for IBEX, the largest and highly regarded North America trade event for the recreational marine industry. In 2017, Ms. Morton was the recipient of the STEP Ahead award, a prestigious award recognizing women in manufacturing who exemplify leadership within their companies. In 2020, Boating Industry recognized Ms. Morton as one of the women in the industry who have made and continue to make great contributions to its success, propel its growth and lead their organizations and peers into the future. Ms. Morton holds a lifetime Certified Purchasing Manager accreditation through Institute for Supply Management and received her B.S. in Organizational Management from Tusculum College, Greenville, TN.

Jeanne Craig, Editor in Chief, Soundings Magazine

Jeanne Craig is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Soundings, a consumer media brand for boating enthusiasts that is owned by Active Interest Media. Joan Maxwell, President, Regulator Marine

Joan grew up in rural Fairfield, NC. She graduated from Mattamuskeet High School and was the first person in her family to graduate from college. She earned a BA in History from the University of North Carolina. She is married to Owen Maxwell and together they currently reside in Edenton, North Carolina.

In 1988, Joan and Owen founded Regulator Marine in an abandoned A&P Grocery Store in Edenton. Regulator is now operating in an 121,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility and is one of the most well-respected brands in the boating industry.

Joan and her team transitioned Regulator Marine from a job shop/manufacturing process to a highly sophisticated lean manufacturing process. Under Joan’s leadership, Regulator received ISO 9000:2008 certification, as well as the North Carolina Department of Labor’s top safety award, the North Carolina Star.

Joan focuses on learning innovative ways to improve the business that God has entrusted to her care. Currently, she is a member of C12, a Christian based leaders’ roundtable that focuses on building better businesses for a greater purpose.

Joan Maxwell demonstrates and demands from her leadership team at Regulator Marine a high level of integrity and positive leadership. Her service is evident in her dedication to not only Regulator Marine, but also to the local community in which Regulator is located. Joan established a Volunteer Program at Regulator Marine which pays employees their regular wages during working hours while they volunteer their time and services to various local organizations of their choosing. In 2018, Joan established the “In His Service” program at Regulator, which oversees Regulator’s charitable giving, as well as its employee emergency assistance fund.  Joe Lewis, 66, is the owner and general manager of Mount Dora Boating Center & Marina, a dealership and full-service marina in central Florida with 94 wet slips and 140 drystack slips. His dealership is Marine Industry 5-Star Certified and routinely ranked among the best in the country providing outstanding buying and ownership experiences. This dealership has a mission to get people on the water and has created several models beyond boat ownership to do so.

Lewis was born and grew up in Harrisburg Pa. He ended a twenty year career in the outdoor power equipment industry when he purchased the Mount Dora business in 1989 and moved to Florida. Married to wife Susan in 1992 they have a 27 year-old son Joey (Jay), 25 year-old daughter Julia. Both are active in the dealership. Lewis says his is a boating family. When not at work chances are you’ll find him boating with his family or scuba diving with his son.

She hosts the popular BOAT BOSS podcast and uses the brand to bring awareness to the boating lifestyle, industry topics, and showcases key events and industry executives worldwide.

Kim co-founded a new start-up, Picked Cherries, in 2021 that helps podcasters and listeners quickly and effortlessly share micro-content of podcasts like never before. The app has been dubbed "TikTok for Podcasters " and is available in iOS and Android stores.

Kim is a visionary and takes challenges head on to important issues like workforce shortages in the marine industry. Promoted to president in 1993, she was the first woman to hold this position in the U.S. boat manufacturing industry.

Kris’s steadfast belief in putting the customer first, and building a great leadership team, has produced world-class results, including top rankings for Grady-White in every third-party customer satisfaction survey ever completed and the highest-ranking satisfaction scores in the saltwater category for every J.D. Power and Associates marine study ever done.

Since 2015, Kristen has served as both President of Sea Tow Services International and President of the Board of Directors for the Sea Tow Foundation. Sea Tow is a second-generation, family-owned and operated franchising and membership-based on-water assistance business, headquartered in Southold, New York.

As President of Sea Tow Services International, Kristen is responsible for overseeing all internal operations, including the company’s membership and sales programs, marketing, communications, the Customer Care Center and technology efforts. She focuses much of her time on business development and maintaining key relationships across the marine industry. Kristen has served on the Board of Directors of the Sea Tow Foundation since inception in 2007 and as President of the Board since 2015.

Kristen was named one of Long Island’s Top 50 Women in Business by Long Island Business News in 2019, and twice recognized by Boating Industry magazine in 2016 on the Women Making Waves list and in 2012 as a Mover and Shaker. The MRAA Educational Foundation recognized Kristen as the Darlene Briggs Marine Woman of the year in 2020. Kristen served on the Board of Directors of Marine Marketers of America from 2014 to 2022.

In 2020 Laura was promoted to the job she dreamt of when she first started, Vice President, West Central Region. Laurie Louvier is the Vice President of Marketing for Dometic Marine, a global leader in OEM and aftermarket marine products including steering, controls, trim tabs, instruments, air conditioning and heating, marine sanitation, refrigeration and more.

Laurie is a seasoned professional who has served the company and the marine industry for 24 years. Over nearly a quarter century, she has been responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, vision, sales performance and growth for the Dometic Marine and Sierra brands. During this period, Dometic Marine and Sierra brands have continued to thrive, evolve and expand, even in the light of challenging market conditions worldwide. This evolution culminated in the February 2022 re-launch, rebranding and market expansion of the iconic Sierra brand, which Laurie has been closely associated with since joining the company.

Laurie believes in giving back to the industry, so she serves on the Board of Directors for the National Marine Dealers Association (NMDA) and acts as Chairperson for International Boatbuilding Exposition (IBEX) planning. She also previously served on the Grow Boating Board of Directors, where she participated in industry-wide efforts to promote and expand the boating lifestyle nationwide.

Laurie holds an MBA from McKendree University and is based in Dometic Marine’s Litchfield, Illinois facility. She is a well-rounded outdoor enthusiast who enjoys cycling, paddle boarding, cooking, music and all types of fitness activities.

Mark Schwabero, former (retired) CEO, Brunswick Corporation

Mark D. Schwabero is the retired Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Brunswick Corporation, having been elected to that post in February 2016. Previously, Mr. Schwabero had been President and Chief Operating Officer of Brunswick, having been appointed to that position in May 2014. Mr. Schwabero had served as President - Mercury Marine since 2008.

Mr. Schwabero joined Mercury in 2004 as President - Mercury Outboards with 28 years of experience as a senior executive in the automotive and commercial vehicle industries. Prior to joining Mercury, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of Hendrickson International of Woodridge, Ill., a leading manufacturer of heavy truck and trailer suspension systems and components.

Before that he served as President, Automotive Products and Regional President for Pilkington Libbey-Owens-Ford. Earlier, Mr. Schwabero was President of Bosch Braking Systems, North America, formed from an acquisition of AlliedSignal’s Braking Systems business, where he had served as President.

A 17-year career with Navistar International preceded these more recent roles and during that tenure he was a Group Vice President of the truck business, Group Vice President of operations and general manager of medium duty products. He also spent two years in sales with Navistar.

Mr. Schwabero holds both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in industrial and systems engineering from The Ohio State University, where he was recognized with the University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1991 and a Meritorious Service Award in 2008.

He also serves as a director of Methode Electronics and 1st Source Corporation and was the former Chairman of the National Marine Manufacturers Association.

Matt Gruhn, President, MRAA

For more than 10 years, Matt Gruhn has served as the President of the Marine Retailers Association, the industry’s leading trade association serving boat dealers, their partners and their customers. Under Gruhn’s leadership and through the creation and delivery of many new programs and services, membership with MRAA has grown by more than 270 percent.

Those new programs include the 2014 acquisition of the Marine Industry Certified Dealership Program; the launch of the online education platform MRAATraining.com; the re-launch of the organization’s 40-year-old annual conference as Dealer Week; and most recently, the launch of the MRAA Certified Pre-Owned Boat Program.

A 25-year veteran of the marine industry, Gruhn began as an associate editor for a group of consumer boating magazines in 1997. He worked his way up to Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Boating Industry magazine. He and his team launched the Boating Industry Top 100 Dealers Program in 2005 and helped to revitalize the MRAA’s annual conference, which attracted just 97 people in 2007 to present day events that attract more than 1,100 people.

Today, Gruhn serves on the board of directors for the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable as well as Associations North, a trade association serving association professionals in the upper Midwest. In his free time, you can find him flyfishing the streams of Southeastern Minnesota, muskie fishing on Lake Minnetonka or driving the boat while his wife and two daughters wake surf.

Before joining Mercury in July 2015, Michelle’s served in global marketing leadership roles at S.C. Johnson, managing iconic brands and P&L's in more than 15 business segments across 80 countries. Prior to S.C Johnson, Michelle held senior leadership positions with Bankers Trust Company and Chemical Bank in New York.

Sara Anghel, President, NMMA Canada

Sara Anghel is president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) Canada and has served in her role since 2008. Anghel has over 25 years of experience in the realm of government relations. She served in a number of political positions with the Canadian government including communications, policy and chief of staff to the Minister of Northern Development & Mines and Environment, Energy, Natural Resources and Health.

Since taking the helm, Anghel has raised the profile of the NMMA and of the recreational boating industry in Canada. Notable accomplishments at NMMA include the first ever annual Canadian Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract, securing more than $1 Million in government funding to support the industry and establishment of NMMA Canada’s first Recreational Boating Day on the Hill in Ottawa where industry leaders meet with government officials to address key issues impacting the boating industry.

Under Anghel’s leadership, NMMA Canada actively engages with the government on a number of important issues such as water access, trade and regulatory issues.

Anghel furthers her involvement and commitment to the recreational boating industry by serving on a number of national and international industry boards including being Chair of the Ontario Region Recreational Boating Advisory Council (RBAC), Co-Chair of Transport Canada’s National Recreational Boating Advisory Council (NRBAC), President of the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA). The International Marine Certification Institute board of directors, board of directors member of the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC), board of director on the Outdoor Caucus Association, a member of the Canadian Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (CORR).

Early in my sales career, I was often the only woman at the table at dealership meetings. Over the years, her technical and product knowledge, commitment to customers and leadership skills have inspired and led the way for the next wave of women entering the field. In addition to promoting and selling Volvo Penta’s marine engine solutions to 600 dealers across the U.S., I have been working with all aspects of the business for the past 24 years.

Propelled by my early experiences in sales, I have been working to team-up with industry colleagues are launching promoting women in the industry. The initiative to support and promote the success of women in the recreational boating industry—from boatbuilders to buyers is very near and dear to my heart . The goal is to expand the number of women in the industry while providing them a much-needed support network. I was selected by the Marine Retailers Association of the Americas as the 2016 Darlene Briggs Woman of the Year, which honors leadership, commitment and the advancement of women in the boating industry. In 2021 I received the STEP award (Science, Technology, Education, and, Production) I currently hold several Industry board positions with WSIA, MRAA and NNMA.

Stephanie Vatalaro is the Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications at the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF), where she leads the consumer and stakeholder outreach strategy for RBFF and its Take Me Fishing™ and Vamos A Pescar™ brand campaigns.

A marketing and communications professional with more than 20 years’ experience in corporate, agency, non-profit and TV newsroom settings, Vatalaro has devoted the last 15 years of her career to getting more people out on the water fishing and boating and conserving our nation’s aquatic natural resources.

Vatalaro currently serves on the American Sportfishing Association’s (ASA) Marketing Committee, Boating Industry’s Leadership Council, NOAA’s Business Advisory Council and SeaTow Foundation’s Boating Safety Advisory Council. She is a past member of ASA’s 60 in 60 Committee and volunteers with Casting for Recovery.

Vatalaro received her B.S. degree from Florida State University and completed a Certificate in Management at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. She grew up in the Florida Keys and is the daughter of a flats fishing guide. She now spends summers fishing and boating with her family on the Potomac River in Virginia.

Steve Heese, President, Chris Craft

Steve Heese is an entrepreneur who has spent the last 25 years in the powersports industry.

Steve Heese grew up fishing and sailing in Tampa Florida. He graduated magna cum laude from Tulane University in New Orleans with a degree in accounting while working full-time in a bar in the French Quarter. Steve joined Price Waterhouse in Tampa after college and passed the CPA exam. After 4 years of working there, Steve attended Harvard Business School in Boston where he received an MBA in 1988.

Following Harvard, joined ERICO International, a privately-owned construction products company, and spent 12 years living and working outside the US. Steve lived in Sydney Australia, where he met his wife Amanda, and their 3 children were born. Steve expanded ERICO in the far East and Europe, moving to Singapore, Hong Kong, Amsterdam and finally London, where Steve was CEO of the entire company. While living in London, in 1996 Steve invested with Stephen Julius, his classmate at Harvard, in Riva Yachts in Italy, which the partners purchased from Rolls-Royce, giving the business partners their first taste of the Marine Industry.

Riva was sold to the Ferretti Group in 1999, and subsequently Steve left ERICO and returned with his family to Tampa in 2000. Shortly afterwards, Steve and Stephen purchased the assets of the Chris-Craft Boat Company in Sarasota at a bankruptcy auction. The partners rebuilt the business and then sold Chris-Craft in 2018 to Winnebago Industries. Today, Steve serves as President of the Company.

While owning Chris-Craft, in 2004, Steve and Stephen purchased the trademarks of Indian Motorcycle at a bankruptcy auction and assembled a team of people to build a and launch a line of motorcycles. Indian was sold to Polaris Industries in 2011.

Steve is currently the Chairman of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and is a director and past chairman of Independent Boatbuilders, Inc (IBBI), the largest marine industry buying co-operative in the world.

Tara is Chief Sustainability Officer of leading marine technology company Navico. Tara has worked in sustainability for more than twenty years, and is passionate about how business and the marine sector can make a positive impact on the environment and society. She is an independent Board Director at Supply Shift and a senior associate with the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. Prior to her current role, she held senior sustainability roles at ENGIE, BSR, BAA and Sedex, and she served as a United States Peace Corps volunteer in Ukraine. Tara is a dual citizen of the United States and the United Kingdom, has lived in six countries, speaks fluent French, and considers herself a global citizen. She holds an M.B.A. from London Business School and a B.A. in International Studies and French from Northwestern University.

Thom Dammrich, former (retired) President, NMMA

When Thomas Dammrich became president of NMMA 20 years ago, he knew he had to get the industry working together and focused on things everyone could agree to work on. One of the first things he tackled was focusing on market expansion efforts that were also measurable. Dammrich’s leadership helped unify the industry to do just that with the Discover Boating campaign, now entering its thirteenth year.

With equal attention, Thom has worked to unite the industry on advocacy issues to protect and grow the industry and ensure the boating public has unfettered used of our nation’s waterways. The American Boating Congress today boast thirty-two industry co-hosts. In his former role as NMMA President, Dammrich spoke for the industry on Capitol Hill and directed NMMA’s staff to protect the industry’s interests in Washington DC. Thom worked to be sure boating was represented at every table where decisions impacting recreational boating and fishing are addressed.

Dammrich’s career spans forty-three years in association management including thirty years as the CEO of two associations, NMMA and IPC-Institute Connecting Electronic Circuits. Throughout his career, Dammrich has been a strong mentor and advocate for women, helping them to build the skills necessary to succeed in business and in life. Sixty percent of NMMA employees were women and 50% of his senior management team at NMMA were strong women leaders. In his current work he continues to mentor women CEOs and others looking to assume greater leadership roles.

Dammrich currently serves on the RBFF Board where he also served from 2000 to 2015 and was Chairman of RBFF from 2005 to 2007. Dammrich was the first to demonstrate the need for the industry to market to a more diverse audience to capture the future buyer and keep them interested in the boating lifestyle. He is a strong advocate for boating safety and conservation.

Dammrich has a BA in Economics, an MBA in Finance, an MS in Accountancy, and a Doctorate of Business Administration, all from DePaul University in Chicago. His is a member of the NMMA Hall of Fame, ASA Sportfishing Hall of Fame, Boating Safety Hall of Fame and has been recognized for lifetime achievement by the Water Sports Industry Association. He is a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Management Committee for the Center for Sportfish Policy and serves on the Board of Directors of Wintrust Bank and Niven Marketing.
